I was inspired to write this piece by Rahapod episode 358, “Black Light in the Darkness ” [1]—which I recommend everyone listen to. In short, the source of my inspiration is their description of Finland’s economic situation: Finland’s economy has seen virtually no growth in 15 years [ 2], productivity is stagnating, and foreign direct investment is not flowing into Finland. These are presented as the reasons why the economy is struggling. Public debt must be taken on year after year, and various cuts are being planned. The episode covers the topic in much greater depth, but the point is clear—when the economy isn’t thriving, the Nordic welfare society cannot flourish.
As a remedy, Rahapodi prescribes productivity growth, the formula they have already repeated: more, better, with less.
As I listened to this, I was driving to meet a long-time client. While listening, I reflected on my own role in solving this problem. This sounds like the kind of problem whose solution would benefit all of Finland and would be a truly significant challenge to tackle. After a moment’s thought, a light bulb went off in my head—that’s exactly what we do at Hefmec! After all, our services are always aimed at increasing productivity. This is also supported by our slogan, “Productivity Engineering.”
How do we respond to the productivity challenge?
- Project – In the implementation of investment projects, we help create opportunities to manufacture new products in Finland or expand existing production. In these projects, we often operate as part of the client’s organization, ensuring that projects are carried out according to plan. We often take on the management and execution of a project or part of it, which gives our clients the freedom to focus on their own core business. This not only speeds up project completion but also improves the quality of the end result.
- Design – We develop work methods and tools that support increased productivity in manufacturing by enabling tasks to be completed faster, more safely, with higher quality, and/or using fewer resources. Design projects can be part of a larger whole or solutions to specific areas for improvement.
- Products – We turn designs into delivered and commissioned products, at which point the designs are truly put into practice. Increasing productivity requires reliable production equipment and tools. That’s why all our products are designed and manufactured to last—for a long time.
All of the examples above aim to produce more and better results with fewer resources.
